Enemies of Happiness 4

Out of the 8 personality problems or 8 Enemies of Happiness in the personality, Anger is most damaging. Anger is an emotional response related to one’s psychological interpretation of having been threatened. At times the response could be volatile. Anger can have many physical and mental consequences. The ability to take right decision is impaired. Unabated continuous anger can cause he decks, migraines, chest pains etc. over a long period anger results in high blood pressure, depression and heart related diseases.


So we all agree that anger must be avoided to remain fit n fine. But how do we do that. I am listening below some suggestions which I do not claim can totally eradicate your anger, but they are helpful. If practiced with a positive attitude and consistently they can defiantly mitigate anger and control minds of very short tempered people. The suggestions are as follows.

1. The first step is to control your speech. Anger is an emotion which will be difficult to handle but speech is something which is comparatively easier to control. Once you practice control of your speech you will also be practicing how to maintain a positive body language also. With the speech and body language under control you will be able to handle even difficult people efficiently. This will result in reduction of the occasions for you to lose your temper.



2. Smile is a very simple antidote to anger. So therefore keep a smiling face.





3. Meditation is also helpful.


4. Yogic exercises everyday will cool down your temperament.


5. When you are angry go to a quiet place- a sea shore or a garden and have a quiet walk.


6. Start listening to soft music that you like.



7. Finally ask yourself: why do I get angry? Is it helping in any way? Am I achieving any objective whatever it may be?

You will find the answer to all the above questions is simple ‘No’. Therefore you must decide ‘Not to get angry at all’. Keep on repeating these questions and decision every day until you find that your temper is cooling down.

Enemies of Happiness 3


In my last posting I had talked about the enemies of happiness within i.e. oneself. But there are many enemies waiting to spoil your happiness outside. These could be found at your workplace or even in the social group that you belong to. They are also there in your neighborhood. We should also not undermine the enemies present in the extended families or among so called friends.


In this post I like to talk about the enemies at the workplace. Most of our conscious time, we spend at the workplace. If we are happy at work we are likely to carry the same good feelings when we reach home. However if we find that there are happiness spoilers at workplace, it’s necessary to identify them. It is also necessary to deal with them for whatever it takes. I wouldn’t say that any given time you can totally be free from such enemies. But if you identify and take remedial measures, you can definitely mitigate their bad influence.



At workplace some people often oppose you due to difference in personality traits. There could also be strong difference of opinions on common matters. But more important than that is when some enemies try to pull you down. The reason could be their insecurity or simple jealousy. Not knowing their presence around you will never help you. Some sweet talkers can also be hidden enemies of your happiness.

Enemies of Happiness 2

Yesterday I had talked about 8 enemies of happiness which resides in human’s body or soul. I had detailed 4 out of these that is anger, fear, jealousy and indecision. If you have contemplated as suggested, am confident that you would have found sufficient relevance of this discussion. Today I shall talk about attachment, hesitation, procrastination and greed. These are also happiness spoilers. Greed if goes unrefined, can cause disaster.

Attachment: Bhagwad Gita advises that any human should not be attached to anything. By attachment I mean you should never have such proximity that separation to that particular object may cause distress. Change is the law of Nature. Everything changes. These changes are bound to bring some objects (including people) close to you and some other away from you. In both situations you have to maintain your poise realizing that this is how life is. It was like this. It is so now. And it will remain the same in all times to come. So for our own happiness we can start practicing non attachment.


Hesitation: Hesitation for anything must be avoided. Your expression is important. If you hesitate to express or to take any action, the opportunity lost will never come back.


Procrastination: It is malady which inflicts some of us. Postponing tasks or decisions do not allow one to grow. Self esteem is lost and guilt inside the mind grows. Therefore it’s best to eradicate the habit of procrastination.


Greed: Greed grows like cancerous cells. Ambition is not greed so therefore both these terms must be understood in their proper perspective. Without ambition you tend not to set your goals and follow them. But greed of any kind mostly takes human to a disasters end. In life, we have example of Hitler. In literature, we have example of Macbeth. The character of Macbeth in Shakespearean play by the same name is nothing but an embodiment of Greed. So banish Greed, altogether!

Enemies of Happiness

In my last posting I had mention that as a 1st step we must identify enemies of our Happiness. These are broadly speaking of two types.

  1. Enemies of happiness residing within ourselves.
  2. Enemies outside. These could be people; this could be a tasks which you don’t like or environment.
In today’s posting I like to tell you about enemies of Happiness which are within are our own selves. I have listed eight. There could be more. Based on these 8 you can prepare your own list. Because Happiness is of prime importance to all of us, we must apply our mind deeply to correct the situation. Following is the list of enemies of Happiness residing in our own Body and Soul.

  1. Anger                              5. Fear
  2. Jealousy                         6. Indecision
  3. Attachment                     7. Hesitation
  4. Procrastination               8. Greed
Today I will talk about 1st four i.e. Anger, Fear, Jealousy and Indecision.

 
My personal experience and those of my students who have shared with me reaffirm that these four enemies are big Happiness Spoilers in our lives. In order to have appropriate benefit of our discussion, I suggest that you may mentally go through the pages of the book of your life. Then identify which were the moments when these four villains have spoiled your happy moments.

Guru Nanak Jayanti

Happiness

The ultimate aim of everyone is to be happy. An individual works hard to make money so that he/she can fulfill their needs. It will make them happy. Children buy toys to play with them and be happy. People travel far and wide experiencing lot of difficulties and spending lot of money to be happy. Students work very hard to get good marks and eventually get good jobs. With these good jobs they think they will be happy.


So pursuit of happiness is the main aim of life for everyone. We think happiness is a destination. Actually happiness must come through the journey. The human’s destination is only death. Therefore each moment that you enjoy must bring you happiness. These moments we spend doing something or the other. All our efforts must therefore be carried out in such a fashion that the bye product is happiness.


Lesson No 1. An adult must choose a profession of liking. If however it is not possible, then he/she must start enjoying the profession they are in. It may look impossible but it is not. Since most of your conscious time you spend on your work therefore it is necessary to enjoy your work. You can also enjoy your routine provided you decide so. Therefore, you should enjoy your bath, use best shampoo that you can afford and the other hygiene products. Be happy to look at your body; admire it. Be happy about it. If your find any deficiencies, don’t worry. Now you have a challenge to remove these. It will give you an opportunity to be successful in your endeavor. Let me tell you every success brings you happiness. When you travel (whichever is your mode) you come across different people, situations, interactions etc. there is something to learn each of these. Start learning. The moment your start learning, you will enjoy even your discomforts during your travel. The learning is an experience which gives immense happiness. You must be ready to recognize and enjoy it.


A couple of days ago, I decided to find out if there are any modern, practical happiness guides available in the market. While I’ll continue my search, I propose to share my experiences and those of lots of students. Incidentally, my students are mostly working professionals from various fields and not rarely they are elder to me.


As a first step I would like you to make a list of your enemies. I mean any enemies of your happiness. They could be people; could be tasks or your un-happening projects. In my next posting I shall tell you how to defeat your enemies of happiness.

Wani Yoga & Third Eye Chakra

In my last posting, I had named the 7 Chakras which are important in Yoga Philosophy. The 5th Chakra or the Throat Chakra concerns about communications which we had discussed. Wani Yoga is also closely connected with the 6th or Third Eye Chakra.


The Third Eye Chakra is associated with the sight as seen both physically and mentally. When I say seeing mentally, I mean what kind of message is given to your mind by what you see. So it is related to your vision. Your perspective and conduct in day to day life normally is controlled by your vision. The Third Eye Chakra is located between the two, and slightly above, the eyes.


The primary issues involved with Wani Yoga are the control that your vision exercises on what you say and how you say it. Evidently, the content is extremely important. If there is any imbalance in third eye chakra the content is likely to be lopsided. The properly balanced third eye chakra will enable you to speak effectively using your wisdom, the connection to the higher self, your imagination and what you want to achieve during the communication.


 The imbalance in the third eye chakra will affect your thinking. You will be confused. You will be indecisive and feel intellectually stagnated. You will hardly have any intuition and your confidence will be on the decline. On the other hand when the third eye chakra is properly balanced you will develop the following abilities:

1. Ability to concentrate and think clearly on an issue at hand.
 

2. You will able to detach yourself and not be emotionally involved so as to impair your judgment. When you witness a situation without involvement, you are able to exercise detachment which is so necessary to lead a happy life.

3. You will be able to trust yourself more than ever. The experience that you have in your life will provide you an inner wisdom which is extremely helpful in all that you do.

4. More than that you will develop a gut feeling. This will help you take to take fast decisions by identifying your priorities. Needless to say that any action has the possibility of going wrong however remote it may be. In fact when we analyze minutely before taking a decision this can happen even more frequently.


So the correction or balancing of the third eye chakra is extremely important. Simple exercises in Wani Yoga enable you to achieve the chakra balance and thus develop the above abilities. These are extremely valuable and help in all your projects.
